[46] Hank Ballard and The Midnighters – Singin’ and Swingin’ with . . .

21 Feb

I love Rock ‘n’ Roll (dimes and jukeboxes optional).  But I just can’t fathom what it is that Tom Moon sees in this collection of generic album tracks that makes him feel the need to recommend them.

From the first note to last, there is nothing here that I haven’t heard before. This is garden variety, and not very exciting, early rock that is no different from anything heard on a hundred cheap 50s compilations.  Except that the songs are less interesting.

It is truly baffling.

Ballard’s voice is wavering and insecure, the compositions disposable fluff almost to a song.  The one exception is the original version of “The Twist”, and even this song – later made a true classic by Chubby Checker in multiple decades – ends up feeling flat and uninspired.

There’s nothing *terribly* wrong with what is here, but it is so lightweight and unimportant that I listen dozens of times more than I might otherwise have done, trying to figure out what it is I missing.

Hours of my life I’ll never get back.

The one saving grace, the thing that makes the album at least tolerable, is some ripping guitar work although I am unable to tell you who it is that is playing.  Despite this being a rare album that does not show up on Spotify – thereby forcing me to buy a hardcopy of the CD – the liner notes are no more than the track listing and a brief history of the King record label.

Insult to injury.

Guess the world really don’t move to the beat of just one drum.  Moon canonizes Singin’ and Swingin’ instead of leaving it in (to my mind) well deserved obscurity.
