[57] Batacumbele – Con Un Poco de Songo

9 May

The timing on this one couldn’t be better – it might not have resonated so well in the dead of winter – but with the green leaves budding on the tree branches, the sun finally shining bright, coats at last being left in the closet and people walking around in shirt sleeves, there is a power, and rightness to the implied heat of these tunes.

The players never pause for a moment to reflect – all is constant motion, kinetic energy, driven by the legion of drums and embellished with swirling horns, whistles and chants.

This is music for dancing to, moving to, living life to.

After some of the heady, cerebral recording I’ve spent time with over the last year and some change, it is refreshing to run into these occasional moments of almost guilty pleasures – shameless, unapologetic feelgood tunes.

I think Phil Sheldon (writer of a guest blog earlier this year) would enjoy this one – the syncopation he so craves is out in full force here, sending mixed messages to brain and toe, insisting on movement but giving multiple possibilities for when and where to tap away.

Although there is plenty to explore musically here – a mix of cultures and traditions from Puerto Rico, Cuba and the American South jumbled together into a coherent whole – most of the time I find myself passing up the opportunity to just let the groove catch me and take me away.

Next Week:  Bauhaus – In The Flat Field
